Maitripa College is host for all events in Portland during this visit by His Holiness.
As the first Buddhist College in the Pacific Northwest, Maitripa College is pioneering holistic graduate education integrating scholarship, meditation, and service in its Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies (MA) and Master of Divinity (MDiv) degree programs.
Maitripa also offers training in classical Tibetan language and continuing education courses. Robust public programming at the college includes traditional Tibetan Buddhist dharma teachings and practices, symposia on Buddhism and Science, and various workshops.
The mission of Maitripa College is inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who has recently said:
We should have a more holistic education system. Holistic means not only material value, but also inner value. We need knowledge about the whole map of the mind, how to build a healthy mind, a healthy body, a healthy family, and a healthy society. – Dalai Lama
Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies (MA)
The Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies at Maitripa offers an unique immersion in contemplative education. The flagship MA program integrates traditional Tibetan scholar-practitioner training with a Religious Studies approach to the study of Buddhism in classes taught by qualified western scholars and Tibetan scholar-practitioners with the highest traditional scholarly degrees. The degree is excellent preparation for those considering doctoral studies, translation, and the pursuit of personal and societal transformation.
Master of Divinity Degree (MDiv)
The Master of Divinity program at Maitripa is a new professional degree for training Buddhist chaplains, spiritual leaders, activists, and compassionate caregivers. This degree reflects a theological approach to Buddhist Studies, emphasizing spiritual formation and the development of a personal theology as well as a deep commitment to service for those called to take their education outward as agents of positive change in the world.
